Are there real haunted houses in Talbot County? By VICKI FISHER Business Editor ST.MICHAELS one thing that many local Realtors agree on there many authentic haunted houses in the Mid-Shore area. After inquiring at 11 real estate branch offices in the area, no one could name a house that had ghosts or supernatural phenomena. According to the Maryland Ghost and Spirit Association (MGSA), however, there are around seven houses or sites in Talbot County that have had reported hauntings. Pat Evans, manager of the Kemp House Inn in St.
Michaels, said she has worked at the house since 1982. The house was built in the mid-1800s by Col. Joseph Kemp, who has a room dedicated to him on the second floor of the three-story building along Talbot Street at West Chestnut Avenue. The Kemp Room has reportedly had strange happenings in it in the past 20 years. Evans said a mother and daughter were once staying in the room when they left ribbon and gift wrap in the trashcan after wrapping presents.
They left the room for a while and when they returned, they found ribbon strung around the floor. A father and son also spent a night at the house and reported a presence in the room, Evans said. The father, sleeping in the bed, said he heard his son get up from the trundle bed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Soon after, the father said he felt the mattress sink as if someone had lain on the bed. He looked over and the son was in the trundle bed.

A rocking chair in the room also was found rocking back and forth with no one in it and an employee reported hearing a door slam downstairs when she was upstairs with no one else in the house, Evans said. Employees also have reported a blue light flashing up and down the stairs and one employee said she found linens and towels had been unfolded and scattered when they had been straightened up the night before. seen or heard anything out of the Evans said. Evans said she would expect the room across from the Kemp Room to be haunted, since there are rumors that Robert E.
Lee once spent the night there. The Kemp House workers think of their haunting as a friendly ghost, calling him after Kemp. There been any recent reports of strange happenings, Evans said. just figure its our friendly little ghost and being she said. Some people have requested to stay at the house because they know reportedly haunted, Evans said, but that happened for long long have been stories around here for quite some said Inn at Perry Cabin Manager John Volponi.
Guests staying in most historic part of the inn have reported seeing a red-headed boy in older clothes standing at the end of the bed staring at them. Volponi said the reports always come from the same room and some guests have been so concerned about the ghost that they have asked to stay in a different room. That section of the inn dates to 1816, he said. Another strange occurrence reported at the inn are a set of French doors that blow open on their own. Volponi said this usually happens in the winter early in the morning.
