The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

10 LN THE PLAIN FRIDAY, JUNE 3. 1994 by symbol for the movie: As a comeback vehicle for a languishing career, it seeks to do little more than turn out a reasonable facart simile of Murphy's greatest success, released a full decade ago. It gives healthy reprises to Bronson Pinchot as the effete Serge and Judge Reinhold as Boy Scoutcop Billy Rosewater, but the show belongs to Eddie, who chases laughably bad, bad guys through a theme park like James apt Bond. If the Bond producers had an ounce of courage, they'd make Eddie the next 007. Rated for violence, language.

The Crow Alex Proyas' nightmarish punk fairy tale, based on the comics by James O'Barr, has a painful art-imitates-life resonance: Brandon Lee was killed just over a year ago filming the scene in which his character is murdered; the movie is about a dead man who mystically returns to life one year later. Lee plays Eric Draven, a rock musician who rises from the dead to seek vengeance against the punks who killed him and his fiancee. Led into the world of the living by a supernatural black crow, Draven is an exterminating angel in black leather and mime-face, stalking his murderers one by one and leaving a crow insignia with their bodies. The movie travels a simple path from one stunt-laden action sequence to the next. But director Proyas fills in the script's gaps with a stunning visual and aural design.

Rated for violence, drug use and language. 100 minutes. Far Away, So Close A sequel, of sorts, to his 1986 work of Desire," this Wim Wenders movie proves that lifting spirits is a worthy goal. It's a wispy portrait of the angel Cassiel (Otto Sander) who watches the chaotic world after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He guards a handful of human beings and longs to bridge the gap between them and their souls; he also yearns to see the world through human eyes.

When a young girl spills over the balcony of her high-rise apartment, Cassiel steps into the mortal world and gets his wish. Rated PG-13. Running time: 140 minutes. The Flintstones Everything Boomers fondly remember from the '60s-era primetime cartoon is here, from the theme jingle to the "Yabba-dabba-doo!" to the anachronistic joke-props: the foot-powered cars, garbage-disposal pig, etc. Director Brian Levant and his 32 writers add a few fillips to the formula, but mostly they're content to make what amounts to a 90-minute episode. (For this they needed 32 writers?) Your tolerance for this, I guess, depends upon your nostalgia for the original, your interest in set design and props, and the goodwill generated by the actors.

Big, cuddly John Goodman couldn't be better suited to play that arrogant but lovable doofus Fred Flintstone if they'd drawn him (though if they had to do a remake of a sitcom, I'd rather see him as Ralph Kramden). It's a dust mite of a movie, here one second, gone the next, but, for some, a comforting escape to an earlier time not the stone ages, the elementary ages. Rated PG. 92 minutes. Four Weddings and a Funeral The Gershwin tune that introduces Mike Newell's romantic comedy is "But Not for Me," but the one that comes to mind when it's over is "'S Wonderful." Light as the zillions of champagne bubbles that pop through its four title celebrations, unabashedly romantic and funnier than three Robin Williams comedies put together, this English confection is quite nearly a perfect movie.

As the couple who are obviously made for each other but keep missing the connection, Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell are simply adorable. Rated R. 100 minutes. Little Buddha Bernardo Bertolucci weaves the story of Prince Siddhartha, who in his search for enlightenment became Buddha, with the story of a Tibetan monk's search for the reincarnation of his revered master a search that leads him to an American boy and his remarkably laid-back, if not spacey, parents. One of Bertolucci's aims is to introduce Westerners to the spiritual wonders of Tibetan Buddhism, and as a religious primer it works fine, a kind of "Greatest Story Ever Told" of Buddhism (that is, if you can get past Keanu Reeves as a most excellent Buddha-dude).

As a drama, well It begins promisingly: In the Siddhartha scenes, Bertolucci and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro work their magic with light and texture, creating a sumptuous visual scheme, heavy on reds and yellows, reminiscent of "The Last Emperor." And the modern story is loaded with emotional ammo. But as Bertolucci continues to cut between the two, each begins to feel half finished, unfulfilled a case of dramatus interruptus. Rated PG. 130 minutes. Maverick Rogue charmer Mel Gibson and director Richard Donner (last seen making "Lethal Weapon 3" together), conspire with screenwriter William Goldman and costars James Garner (the TV Maverick) and Jodie Foster to make the cheekiest romp through the West to come along since "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," the last comedy in memory to demonstrate how the West was fun.

It's all outlandish stunts, high spirited banter, lickety-split pacing and campy cameos (Who are those guys, anyway?) shamelessly light and escapist, it's just what the critic ordered to cure the Western blues. Rated PG (for a few cuss words and TV-style gunfights). 115 min. Sirens More than anything else, "Sirens" is about naked bodies. Voluptuous, rosy, really splendid naked bodies, almost all of them female.

Is it obscene, or is it art? That's the issue skillfully imbedded in John Duigan's breezy, extremely canny movie, an argument for free expression that never feels like a polemic thanks only in part to all that distracting flesh. Set in Australia in the 1930s, "Sirens" revolves around a controversy of the times: a dispute between the Church of England and artist Norman Lindsay over one of his works, an etching called CINEMARK THEATRES MOVES 10 Hits Willoughby 943-2090 Loehmann's Plaza 1-90 at Bishop Chardon Rd. $1.00 Ente Entertainment. "The Crucified Venus," a nude woman reclining on the cross. The work and conflict were real, as was Lindsay, played by Sam Neill.

But the rest of the plot comes from Duigan, who uses the case as a taking-off point for a story about the seismic effect that a visit to Lindsay's bohemian retreat has on a straitlaced cleric (Hugh Grant) and his wife (Tara Fitzgerald). Rated for nudity and sexuality. 94 minutes. a Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould Rarely has the marriage of subject and style been as blissfully compatible as in Francois Girard's film about an eccentric musical genius that is itself touched by genius and eccentricity. Borrowing the 32-part structure of Bach's "Goldberg Variations" one of Gould's great recordings Girard plays one- to three-minute variations on the theme of the Canadian pianist's art and very curious life.

Girard and his co-writer, Don McKellar, use a savvy blend of documentary and fiction to portray this extraordinary man, who died in 1982 at the age of 50. Stratford Festival actor Colm Feore plays Gould like a dashing Byronic hero, manic one moment, pale and aloof the next. Their particular genius is to honor Gould's art without trying to explain it. Not rated. 93 minutes.

When a Man Loves a Woman It never uses any of the tollowing phrases: 12 steps, higher power, enabler, inner child, co-dependent, dysfunctional family. But there's no doubt it's a therapy movie, and I found myself responding to it the way I've always imagined therapists must respond to patients: alternately moved and bored silly, and gripped with an urge to instruct the characters how to get their acts together and be done with it. Meg Ayan is cute but shallow as Alice Green, who at first looks like a perky wife and mother in a perfect second marriage to Michael (Andy Garcia). But appearances deceive, and it isn't long before we notice what Michael doesn't: High-spirited Alice is just plain high. Rated for domestic violence, subject matter and language.
